In 1996, a new political superstar was born when Barack Obama was elected to the Illinois state senate. He would win re-election six years later, running unopposed after an unsuccessful bid for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000.
It was 2004, however, that launched Obama into the national spotlight. Midway through his campaign for the U.S. Senate, he was asked to give the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in Boston, Massachusetts. The speech introduced Obama and his politics to a nation hungry for leaders they could look up to and believe in. He delivered in a big way with a platform of national unity.
“The pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States; Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats. But I’ve got news for them too. We worship an awesome God in the Blue States, and we don’t like federal agents poking around in our libraries in the Red States. We coach Little League in the Blue States and yes, we got some gay friends in the Red States. There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and patriots who supported the war in Iraq. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.”
A divided nation eagerly welcomed this new voice, and it was no surprise when Obama trounced his Republican adversary at the polls, garnering almost 70% of the vote. But it wouldn’t stop there – a great national groundswell began, urging Senator Obama to run for President of the United States of America. A great grassroots effort to draft the best man for the job; to ask him to lead us from a nation divided back to the United States of America.
On February 10, 2007, Senator Obama formally announced his candidacy for the 2008 presidential election. The same grassroots organizations dedicated to drafting him into service have rallied to the cause, offering support and spreading the word of this great leader among their fellow citizens. Ours is one such group, and we are eager to have you aboard. Click Here to view Obama's announcment speech on BarackTV
"It's a time where you can go to any town hall or street corner or coffee shop and hear people express the same anxiety about the future; hear them convey the same uncertainty about the direction we're headed as a country. Whether it's the war or Katrina or their health care or their jobs, you hear people say that we've finally arrived at a moment where something must change."
--Senator Barack Obama
